III.- Remarks
3.1.- The story board
The
general Franco, the chief of the new Spanish state, wrote in 1940, with
the name of Jaime de Andrade, a novel "Raza" . The title can surprise
people who don't understand Spanish. It is more a reference for the
idea of a Spanish nation, the nation of all people united under the
Spain banner and its great empire. And to prove it, the picture "Raza"
begins with the evocation of the horrible year of 1898 for Spain. Then
the author wants to explain that Spain would be just about to disappear
because of the division of the Spanish people, division born from
politics. Jaime de Andrade legitimates the military mutiny as a task
of national salvation. The director of this picture is José Luis
Sáenz de Heredia who has worked with Luis Buñuel before the civil war.

Espíritu de una Raza -
Spirit of a race
(1950)

German Poster (Year ?)
The incredible story of a “censored” picture
On the 3rd of July 1950, the
picture "Race" knows a new premiere under the title of "Spirit of a
Race". But it is not the only difference. We have to note, too, the
disappearances of allusions (or scenes) too obviously against the
north- Americans, (in particular about the year 1898), or too favorable
with the Falangist party created in 1933 by José Antonio Primo de
Rivera (1903-1936) and declared illegal in 1936 by the "Frente Popular"
.
At last, the voices of the actors from the 1942 version are
dubbed by the voices of the actors who have dubbed in Spanish in 1949
“Gone with the wind”.
That means:
Even Alfredo Mayo, your dear Alfredo Mayo has not
Alfredo Mayo’s voice!
An
order has been given: all the rolls of “Race” original version have to
be destroyed. The picture “Race” seems to have disappeared forever.
It’s only about fifty years later that a very spoilt and uncompleted
roll is found in a store of a Spanish itinerant projectionist. And
better too! After the fall of the wall in Berlin researches in the UFA
Studios archives in ex East-Berlin and ex German Democratic Republic,
permit to “excavate” an other original roll which has been conserved in
a “miraculous” perfect state.
Only in 2002 people can discover the two
versions in DVD by Divisa Ediciones (Divisa Home Video Spain).
In 2006 the same producer has commerzialised two packs of Spanish films
about the civil war, the first one with four films made 1975, between
them, of the Raza in its two versions, and the second one with 4 films
made after 1975.
